Reading a TNFD LEAP assessment
What good looks like when a company tells you where it touches nature.
A LEAP assessment is only as useful as its Locate step. If a company can't tell you where its sites and sourcing regions are, the rest is guesswork.
Locate
Look for a map of direct operations and priority supply regions overlaid with sensitive areas — protected areas, key biodiversity areas, water-stressed basins.
Evaluate
Good assessments separate dependencies (what the business needs from nature — water, pollination, stable soils) from impacts (what it does to nature).
Assess
Risks should be tied to specific locations and pathways, not listed generically. "Water scarcity" is a theme; "water allocation cuts at two named sites" is a risk.
Prepare
Check for targets, mitigation hierarchy (avoid, reduce, restore, transform) and how progress will be measured.
Tools you'll see
Screening tools like ENCORE help with dependencies and impacts by sector; spatial tools like IBAT help locate sensitive areas. They're starting points, not answers.
