Embodied carbon: the emissions nobody meters
As grids get cleaner, the carbon locked into materials becomes the bigger share of a building's footprint.
Operational energy shows up on a bill every month. Embodied carbon — from making, transporting and installing materials — is spent before anyone moves in, and nobody meters it.
Know the stages
Whole-life carbon assessments follow lifecycle stages: product and construction (upfront), use, end of life, and benefits beyond the building. Upfront carbon is emitted before handover and can't be clawed back.
The biggest lever is not building new
Keeping and reusing an existing structure usually saves more than any low-carbon material choice. Start every project by asking what can stay.
Then the heavy materials
Cement and steel dominate most structures. Specify lower-clinker concrete, higher recycled-content steel and lighter structural systems.
Make it measurable
- Ask suppliers for Environmental Product Declarations
- Run an LCA at concept stage, when design changes are cheap
- Set a project budget in kgCO2e per square metre and track it like cost
Why it's a career skill
Planning authorities and investors increasingly ask for whole-life carbon numbers. People who can produce them early in design are rare.
